Photo of the Day (9.7.08)

Between the satellite dishes and the barren, otherworldly landscape in this photo, you could be forgiven for thinking it had been taken on the moon. It's all the more amusing therefore, to find out that Flickr user konakoka, got this spacey shot on top of Mauna Kea, the dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The lack of light pollution and the high altitude make Mauna Kea a top spot for astronomy. The summit is littered with all manner of observatories and satellite dishes, as we see here in this photo. I like the way the focus of the image has been pushed to the very bottom, leaving an almost limitless blue sky to dominate.

Remember the Olympics? This photo from the Closing Ceremonies in the National Stadium was taken by pirano. Notice the dancers on the balls, seemingly suspended in mid-air. Will we ever see another Olympics with such an impressive Opening and Closing Ceremonies?

Start practicing your large-group dancing, Londoners.

I really like photos that don't just capture the essence of a travel destination, but the act of travel itself. Taken in Grand Central Station in New York City, nabil.s' photo gives an interesting perspective on people going about their daily voyages. Makes you wonder where they are all coming from and where they are headed.

This picture taken by jrodmanjr of a fireworks display in San Francisco really caught my eye. Notice how the bright lights coming from the Bay Bridge create a bit of a vignette around the picture.

The low light makes it tough to get a super crisp shot in these situations, but jrodmanjr did a nice job with this one.

Every picture in his photostream could qualify for a Photo of the Day!

Matt Coats wrote in his description about this picture that he took it from a "secret vantage point" in Guatemala. I'm reminded about the time I stood on a street corner in Hoi An, Vietnam taking pictures of people in various groupings as they passed by on bicycles or cyclos. It took several shots to get the few that were halfway decent.

I wonder where Coats was standing and how did he find his vantage point. Is he in a shed? There is a towel hanging in the shadows. The blues and the reds in this picture are what first caught my attention. The framing could not be more perfect.

If you've captured an image from a vantage point that served you well, send it our way at Gadling's Flickr Photo Pool. It could become a Photo of the Day.

I just got back from a quick Labor Day jaunt to Paris, which is the theme of today's Photo of the Day. Many an hour have I spent sitting on the Parisian streets with an espresso (or six), laptop and a few hours to soak in the culture.

Perhaps I'm just a sad aficionado of cafe culture, but this is one of my favorite things about Paris.

Flickr user Marni Rachel shot this photo, that, despite my being back from Paris for only 15 hours, makes me miss the city.

Although this photo doesn't have any scenery or people, for some reason it screams "vacation!" It's the colors and the way the light has been captured that the first words that come to my mind are "happy", "sun", and "fiesta". Also, I was 100% sure that this photo was taken either in Jamaica or in Brazil -- but nope, it was taken by user LadyExpat in Kota Kinabalu, capital of Sabah, a state in Malaysia.

Sometimes all you need for a really interesting photo is just a change of perspective. That's what I liked about this image from Flickr user larixk. Instead of shooting this abstract sculpture head on, it looks like we're directly underneath it, looking up at the sky. Each of the metallic spheres also offers us a faint reflection of the scene behind, providing further intrigue. It almost looks like a model of a giant 3-D chemical compound at a science museum.

Have any travel photos you've taken of cool sculptures? Why not share them with our readers here on Gadling? Just add it to our Flickr pool and we just might choose it as our Photo of the Day.

I came to a depressing conclusion the other night: summer is almost over and that means that soon we will return to extended dark evening hours. I do love long summer nights when the sun sets late, but this photo was a good reminder of just how great evening shots can be. Big Ben stands almost secondary to the car lights that whiz by in this wonderful shot by fiznatty.

This photo, from konakoka, shows the Kapoho Reef Pools off the coast of Hawaii. According to the photographer, the water in these pools is heated by nearby volcanoes and the pools contain up to eight types of coral. The colors and clarity of this photo are really impressive.
