Photo of the Day (3.16.10)

Today's photo of the day comes all the way from Petulu, Bali! Captured by user mikeyu1402, the photo was taken at an Elephant Safari Park on the popular Indonesian island. The post-processing of the image really makes the texture of the elephant's skin stand out and highlights the solitary eye staring back into the lens.

Beautiful shot mike! If you've had a special moment with a large land mammal and have the picture to prove it, send it our way on the Gadling Flickr Pool! It might be selected as our Photo of the Day!

This week we discuss India's Festival of Colors, the United States' new Travel Promotion Act, frozen ferries in the Baltic Sea, and a pilot who managed to fool authorities and fly commercial planes unlicensed for 13 years! Also, we speak exclusively with cargo pilot & Video of the Week contributor Matt Wright!
Bruce is back to show you how to stay fit on the go; Sheila brings us a new segment on dating practices from around the world, and we take a look at California sea life from above and below the water.

Photo of the Day (3.9.10)

Take a closer look. Go on - click the image! Is it a miniature train set? Photoshop trickery? Not quite. Today's Photo of the Day is from Flickr user dileeps, who managed to take this shot of Sienna using a tilt-shift lens.

Tilt-shift lenses have the ability to tilt the plane of focus and shift the camera's line of sight, which can be used to produce the "miniature faking" effect seen above. Sometimes referred to as "smallgantics", it's a trend that's becoming more widespread with the aid of digital processing - so if you see something that looks too small and detailed to be true, you now know what the explanation is.

If you have some tricks up your photo processing sleeves, we want to see them! Submit your photo to Gadling's Flickr Pool and it could be featured as our Photo of the Day!

Bruce has packing tips for one of the most remote destinations in the West; Aaron will show you the right way to prepare sushi, and only one of us ends up getting married in Vegas; stay tuned to find out who...

Photo of the Day (3.2.10)

Today's Photo of the Day comes from Flickr user twoeightnine. Taken just north of San Simeon, California, this great landscape shot captures the beautiful combination of mist, pines, and rocky coastline that Northern California is famous for.

If you've never thought about driving California's Pacific Coast Highway, you can read up about it here to see why it's one of the best road trips that the United States has to offer.

Got a great shot from a road trip that you've been on? Submit it to our Gadling Flickr pool and it could be selected as our Photo of the Day!

In this week's episode - we discuss Google's new project on the Trans-Siberian Express, break down the latest looming British Airways strike, discuss Seymourpowell's lofty Aircruise concept, and discuss the latest blunders from Ryanair and the TSA.

Bruce is back for another travel tip; we'll also show you the best spots in San Francisco in a new segment called 24 hour turnaround and show you what it's like to rock climb in the California Wilderness.

Photo of the Day (2.23.10)

Today's Photo of the Day is a dramatic shot from Flickr user driftingfocus. Beyond the lighting, stark contrast, and simplicity of the image, I find that the emotion captured on this performer's face is very moving; the mark of a well timed shot. The photo's caption explains the setting:
"A woman performs a traditional funeral rite dance on Jindo Island, South Korea. This dance, native to the island, is a national treasure in Korea."
South Korean funeral dances are performed to both comfort the mourner and pray for the soul of the deceased. Certainly a shot that tells a story, and piques my curiosity for South Korean culture.

If you have photos to share, submit them to our Gadling Flickr Pool, we might just pick it as our Photo of the Day!
